Africa’s Women’s Day (AWD) is commemorated annually across the continent on 31 July and is a day earmarked to recognise and affirm the role of women’s organising in achieving the political freedom of Africa and advancing the social and economic status of women on the continent.
Africa’s Women’s Day was proclaimed as a day to be commemorated during the first conference of the Pan-African Women’s Organization (PAWO) which was held in July 1962 in Dar es Salaam Tanganyika (now known as Tanzania).

Launch of the Yellow Scarf Campaign
Africa's Women' s Day was observed on 1st August 2022 at the Permanent Observer of the African Union to the UN with the launch of the yellow scarf campaign.
The launching of the #yellowscarf campaign is an opportunity for African women & others to change the narrative, amplify voices, & promote achievements while paying tribute to Pan African Women's contributions to the advancement of Women in Africa.
Young women diplomats from African missions were invited for the event which was followed by a networking reception.
The scarf is a versatile clothing and an accessory that has been used throughout history for a number of reasons. The colour yellow represents wealth, prosperity, fertility, light, and wealth which conveys a positive and dynamic image of women. Yellow also signifies creativity and pure knowledge and is the colour attributed to the African Continent.
